Stock Market Club visits New York Stock Exchange

CLICK ON PHOTO TO VIEW SLIDESHOW!

On December 11, 32 student members of Fairfield Prep’s Stock Market Club became the first public group allowed to visit the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) since 9/11.  The students, along with three chaperones, visited the Museum of American Finance and the NYSE on Wall Street in New York City.  A BIG “Thank You” to Mr. Roselli P'16 for arranging our visits and Mrs. Gorab (Guidance) for helping to chaperone. The day after our visit, Hilton Hotels went public and they had models on the floor in spa robes that said Hilton on the back to promote the IPO. The floor reporter Robert Frank was talking live with them right behind the CNBC booth, and said: “We have another milestone, yesterday the exchange welcomed back our first group tour in a very long time, hosted by Morgan Stanley, the boys from Fairfield Prep came to visit us with their teachers Ms. Leonardo and Ms. Gorab.” His counterpart at the desk Simon Hobbs commented, “I understand it’s a popular class.”  Robert Frank: “Actually it’s a club, not a class, and every grade level was represented here; I love the concept, it’s just too bad they didn’t come today, the view was better.” Overall, the trip was a great experience, and hopefully the first of many more to come.

Fairfield Prep Basketball wins Holiday Classic Tournament

FAIRFIELD - Fairfield Prep head basketball coach Leo Redgate called Saturday’s first half performance against Notre Dame-Fairfield the best basketball his team has played to date this season. And 16 minutes was really all the Jesuits needed.

Led by an aggressive and stifling defensive effort from the start, Prep jumped out to a 25-8 and cruised to the 83-52 victory over the Lancers to win the Fairfield Holiday Tournament for the second year in a row at Alumni Hall.

“I thought we played better defense tonight than we did the other night,” said Redgate, referring to the Jesuits 109-64 win over Warde on Thursday in the opening round of the tournament. “Defensively I thought we did really well.”

The Jesuits (4-0) took advantage of some early Notre Dame (1-3) mistakes and had no trouble connecting on the offensive end. Prep’s defense held the Lancers to just five field goals in the first half and did a nice job of limiting Notre Dame’s CJ Davidson to seven points on the evening. Jaylen Jennings scored a game-high 21 points for the Lancers, with 11 of those coming in the second half.

“We were very, very, tight to start the game,” Notre Dame head coach Vin Laczkoski said. “And like true great teams they smelled blood and went after us. And give them credit; they did a very, very good job. That’s why they are No. 1 in the state.”

Prep received a balanced effort scoring as 11 players connected with the hoop, led by senior Dave Zielinski’s 18 points who was named the tournament MVP for his efforts on both ends of the floor. Prep had six players score in double figures as the Jesuits led 53-20 at the half.

Notre Dame settled down in the second half, but it was too much of an uphill climb as Prep rotated players in and didn’t let the Lancers outscore them in the final two quarters.

Redgate stressed the progression of his team and improving each game. Prep will have its first big test come Jan. 3 as they host Hillhouse in a rematch of last year’s Class LL state final “Our goal is to keep getting better,” Redgate said.

Keeping with the theme of defense, in Saturday’s consolation game of the tournament, Warde (1-3) picked up its first win over the season with a 60-50 victory over Ludlowe. “Since our first three games we’ve really put a lot of focus on our defense,” head coach Ryan Swaller said. “And the goal for us was to keep them (Ludlowe) at 50 and we kept them right there. And we knew if we did that we’d have an opportunity to win if our offense came through.”

After falling behind in the opening quarter, the Mustangs buckled down on both ends of the floor finding a nice rhyme, outscoring Ludlowe 21-10 in the second quarter. Junior Brandon Bisack connected on three 3-pointers and scored all 11 of his points to give Warde a 30-23 lead at the half. “He’s huge,” Warde senior Nick Cotto said of Bisack. “He knocked them down in practice (and) we made a nice run down there in the end of the first half.”

Ludlowe fought its way back into the game as junior Chad Peterson drove the lane to tie the game at 46 with 3:37 left. But Warde’s Giacomo Brancato and Cotto both hit jumpers and then Brancato made two free throws to build a 52-46 advantage that held. “We expended a lot of energy in the third quarter getting back into the game,” Ludlowe coach John Dailey said. “They were really ready for us. They had a good game plan.”

Warde was paced by Cotto’s 20 points and Brancato added 16. Darren Lee led Ludlowe (1-3) with 15 and Mark Malone chipped in 12. “We (had a) tough first three games but to be able to come off that, stay together and get a win here (and) to come in third place, it’s not what we wanted coming into this but we’ll take it, definitely,” Cotto said.

Jennings, Davidson, Malone, Cotto, Zielinski and Tom Nolan were all named to the all-tournament team.

Fairfield Prep, ND-Fairfield to meet in tourney final

By Reid L. Walmark, December 27, 2013, CT Post Watch Prep YouTube highlights of Prep game.

FAIRFIELD -- The first-round matchups Thursday night at the Fairfield Prep Holiday Classic high school boys basketball tournament, which led to a Jesuits-Lancers final Saturday night at 8, were as different as could be.

Notre Dame-Fairfield rallied from a one-basket deficit entering the fourth quarter at Fairfield University's Alumni Hall and defeated Fairfield Ludlowe 56-52 in the opener. Fairfield Prep, the host, led by a basket midway through the first quarter, then inserted its all-state player, 7-foot-2 inch Paschal Chukwu, and began pouring it on. The Jesuits posted a 109-64 victory over Fairfield Warde in the second game. Notre Dame and Fairfield Prep met in last year's tournament final as well.

The Lancers (1-2) trailed Ludlowe 42-39 before clicking in the fourth quarter to earn its first win of the season. Jaylen Jennings led Notre Dame with 17 points and Jake Heaton added 13. The Falcons, who will meet cross-town rival Warde on Saturday at 6 in the consolation game for the second straight year, got 17 points from Mark Malone and 15 from Matt Doyle. Ludlowe dropped to 1-2.

Prep led the Mustangs 10-7 before Jesuits coach Leo Redgate summoned Chukwu, who is recovering from an injury, off the bench. Prep, which improved to 3-0, closed out the first quarter on a 23-9 run. Chukwu, who played sparingly, finished with 14 points, one of five Jesuits in double-figures. Tommy Nolan paced Prep's attack with 21 points, followed by Ryan Murphy's 19, Ryan Foley and Chukwu's 14, and 13 from Keith Pettway. Nick Cotto scored 18 points for Warde (0-3), Giacomo Brancato, averaging 21.7 points per game, added 17 and Brandon Bisack scored 10 points.

"I've led by 30 points, taken out my starters and lost. That's happened," Prep coach Leo Redgate said. "When you're up 40 points, that's when you take out your starters."

The Jesuits held a 30-16 lead entering the second quarter and were up by 63-35 going into halftime. It was 89-53 in favor of the Jesuits at the start of the fourth quarter. No Prep starter was on the court in the final period.

"I thought we played a pretty good game. I thought we shared the ball pretty well. My job is to create five to seven weapons to cause problems for the other teams," Redgate said. "I thought we did some bad things on defense, and I put them (starters) back in to start the third quarter to go out and make corrections."

Warde coach Ryan Swaller was impressed with Prep's backcourt, noting the improvements from last year in guards Tommy Nolan and Ryan Murphy.

"Nolan controlled the ball. He made things happen for himself and his teammates, and Murphy was tremendous," Swaller said. "They showed the maturity that they didn't have last year. We let them control the game. I know the type of players they have. They're a good team, a state finalist team. You have to give credit to them."

Swaller said he was impressed with his young players who played most of the second half after his starters were removed. "We did not stick with what we had to," Swaller said in characterizing the Mustangs' play before gave his reserves a chance to gain some experience.

Neither coach in the first game -- Vinny Laczkoski for Notre Dame and John Dailey for Ludlowe -- had the opportunity to experiment with rotation combinations.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Joe Cantey and Jordan Pettway, between a Lancer' successful harassment attempt to disrupt a layup on a Ludlowe breakaway, drew Notre Dame even then ahead by three points within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. A steal by Doyle, who fed Hayes Kelchner for a layup moved the Falcons to within a point soon after Notre Dame's pair of 3-pointers. But that's as close as Ludlowe would be over the balance of the fourth quarter.

"We're still trying to figure out our identity as a team," Laczkoski said. "In the first half, there was a lot of good things we did. In the third quarter, we came out flat; we were a little tentative. In the fourth quarter, we were able to catch the momentum at the start.

"I like the fast pace, we just didn't convert. When you score 54 points in a game, that's not converting a lot," Laczkoski said.

Notre Dame, which led by 31-26 at halftime, is quite young. Pettway and Jesse McIntosh are sophomores who start for the Lancers and 10th-grader Cantey is in the first rotation to come in, as is freshman Anthony Gadsden.

Dailey was waiting for Doyle to have a breakthrough game, and his 15-point performance represented that, he said. "Mark Malone stepped up with his three 3-pointers. I saw a lot of good things tonight. We scored up in the 50s, and that's good for a team that's scored in the 40s and 30s the last couple of years. We're young. We're going to make mistakes, and that's OK. We just made a couple of errant passes in the fourth quarter.

"We gave up six quick points and let them back in. We're trying to learn how to win. It's a process," Dailey said. "We've got to learn how to extend leads. We've got to learn to play from the outside in. We've got to pound it down low more."

Fairfield Prep to begin construction of Student Life Center

Fairfield Prep will begin construction of a Student Life Center. The Center will serve as a crossroads for important campus activities. This state-of-the-art, technology-enriched, multi-purpose facility will feature a number of specialized, but functionally related spaces. The Center will foster a synergy between the academic and co-curricular lives of the school by providing students the opportunity to meet, to interact, to explore, and to cultivate their interests outside of the classroom. The facility will include an enhanced dining area to accommodate 500 students and other school sponsored functions; an assembly area for formal and informal meetings; and office space to support various student-based programs such as Campus Ministry, the SEED Diversity Program, and Community Service. The project is to commence in the spring of 2014 and be completed in the fall of 2015.
